My favorite Substacks:
A short list of my go-to Substack reads. Full disclosure: some are the work of my gifted fellow scribes. All graphics are from their respective Substacks and copyrights belong to them.
I’m in the midst of writing my next Substack piece, but in the meantime, here are some of my favorites on the platform and soon to be some of your favorites was well.
Bookish: A writer’s blog by a writer’s writer. Christine Sneed lives the life in all its glory and frustrations. She knows her craft, offers wonderful tips and techniques, and always with a delightful sense of humor and good cheer.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: Political and social commentary by an NBA legend. Insightful, smart, and well-reasoned on the issues of our day. I’ve never been much of a basketball fan, but I’m maven for Abdul-Jabbar’s wisdom.
Raphael Writes: Another writer’s blog by a writer’s writer. Lev Raphael knows everything you want to know about the craft and the industry. Smart stuff from a prolific wordsmith.
The EndGame: Don Achkin’s lively take on retirement and the myths of what “growing old” entails. Age isn’t just a number. It’s the art of continued learning what life is all about.
Joy’s Newsletter: And we’re talking “joy” in every sense of that word. Joy E. Held takes joy in writing, books, and authors. A sweet take on the writer’s life.
The Free Press: Bari Weiss’s alternative news site that holds nothing back. Journalism and think pieces guaranteed to make you either furious or nod your head in recognition or both. I fall into the latter camp, which is why I like The Free Press. It challenges where you stand on issues. A Substack that will both piss you off, make you say “hell, yeah!” and often have both reactions at the same time.
Typetown: Another typewriting Substack from another typewriter fanatic. We are a fervent lot
A Migrant In Mexico: The new kid on the block! Nadine Hier is a Brit living in Mexico City. A wise writer, with fresh takes on issues writerly, culturally, and so much more.
Coming next week from The Typewriter’s Collage: The Wisdom of a Rabbi Remembered
Thanks for the mention, Arnie! Keep on clacking 👍
Arnie, thanks so much for the shout-out!
